I traveled to San Angelo to document one of the five largest pro rodeos in the USA, the San Angelo Rodeo & Stockshow sanctioned by PRCA.and features three weeks of rodeo events. I was there for seven days but rodeo events only on three of those so I took the opportunity to explore around some.

Clarendon, Texas is located in the Southeastern portion of the Texas Panhandle and established on a small portion of the JA Ranch managed by Charles Goodnight. The community was started by a group of fundamentalist Methodists who wanted to separate themselves from unrighteous societies. The community quickly became known as "Saints' Roost".
Clarendon recently held its 145th Saints' Roost Independence Day Celebration 2022 with community events in and near the Donley County Courthouse Square and three evenings of ranch rodeo action hosted by the Clarendon Outdoor Entertainment Association.

Kimball, Nebraska claims to be the highpoint of Nebraska but the actual location is 25 miles to the southwest and close to where the states of Nebraska, Colorado, and Wyoming meet. #highpoint #nebraska #americanheartlands
The location is on privately owned land that is used to pasture American Bison. There were no signs of Bison when I was there but that may not be the case when you go there so use some common sense if they are on the location.
I did make an attempt to visit the tri-state intersection close to this location but it too was on private land but no public access that i could readily see. While attempting to confirm the location, I was detained by US Air Force personnel and detained for being too close to an active nuclear missile silo. I did cut some video for that excursion but the military confiscated all the recordings near the missile site and my detainment. I never violated any of the signage in the area but it still cost me more than 90 minutes of lost time when I was already under pressure to get to Cheyenne, Wyoming.

Not much remains of the combined power and ice plant except the building itself built in 1914 to serve the needs of the community of Kimball, Nebraska. The power plant remains in operation so it is not open to the public. But thanks to a local historian we get to explore the facility and the vintage diesel and natural gas-powered engines used to generate electricity.
We cover a number of topics along the way including the need to maintain old reliable equipment for power generation when renewable energy sources fail to supply enough power to meet demand when the wind doesn't blow and the Sun doesn't shine.
Is there an old plant or manufacturing facility still in use in your rural community that deserves more attention to its heritage and stories? I would love to hear from you! Contact Us
