Not much remains of the combined power and ice plant except the building itself built in 1914 to serve the needs of the community of Kimball, Nebraska. The power plant remains in operation so it is not open to the public. But thanks to a local historian we get to explore the facility and the vintage diesel and natural gas-powered engines used to generate electricity.
We cover a number of topics along the way including the need to maintain old reliable equipment for power generation when renewable energy sources fail to supply enough power to meet demand when the wind doesn't blow and the Sun doesn't shine.
Is there an old plant or manufacturing facility still in use in your rural community that deserves more attention to its heritage and stories? I would love to hear from you! Contact Us
