I-40 has replaced most of the original road bed once occupied by Historic Route 66 across the state of Texas. Many small communities were bypassed by the new super highway but most of them have not only manage to survive, some have revived with community pride some of the original thrill of Route 66. The town of Groom went one step further with the addition of the largest cross in the Northern Hemisphere. The cross dominates the horizon for 25 miles and has become a popular stop for Route 66 travelers. The Bug Ranch in Conway has survived for a couple of decades as the definitive parody of the well known Cadillac Ranch near Amarillo. The thrill of traveling Route 66 continues to be a mixture of vintage cars, motels, sights and roadside curiosities. Visitors to Texas have always been received with big Texan smiles and a hearty dose of hospitality. A stop halfway on Historic Route 66 between Chicago and LA will convince you that Texas food and hospitality are the best to be found on America's Mother Road. Fran's ugly crust pies and small town service is just what you need at this point in Adrian, Texas.
