New Mexico is fortunate to have many stretches of the Route 66 road alignments from the 1930s and 1950s still in place so you can still get a feel for the original Mother Road instead of flying down I-40. I traveled as many of the original roadbeds as I possibly could with one pass in October of 2008. A favorite stretch of mine runs between Glenrio, NM and San Jone, NM. This particular alignment dates back to the '30s when there was nothing but loose gravel on top of a narrow mound between ditches and the speed limit was 35 mph and sometimes deadly at that. It was sad to see some of the ruins I had photographed four years ago along this stretch have fallen further into ruin almost beyond recognition. I think the Route 66 mission was a successful one and I have selected several images that represent some of the sights along Historic Route 66 in New Mexico to be made available as Dusty Reins Collectible Postcards.
